Ripon Market Place

NY Highways has completed an extensive and complex set of resurfacing works, with the project involving the regeneration of roads and paving going through the centre of Ripon.

Phase 1 took place in November and December, with phase 2 completing at the end of February, significantly ahead of schedule.

The problem

The roads and paving running through Ripon Market Place had ongoing issues with surface course deterioration.

Parts of the surface were beginning to sink and the block paving was failing, causing a potential safety risk for residents and visitors. In addition, drainage systems and stone sets in loading bays had been damaged by previous contractors.

These defects were becoming an eyesore at the popular location.

The solution

The work undertaken was significant, with excavations going down 1160mm. NY Highways replaced the problematic block paving with a more robust asphalt surface to ensure it is fit for the future.

All the damaged drainage systems have been replaced or repaired, with drainage channels created out of stone sets. The renewal and resetting of all onsite ironwork, along with remedial repairs to the damaged stone sets in the loading bays, have been completed.

The team had to ensure disruption was minimised for businesses and pedestrians, and also had to allow the weekly market to take place in the centre square.

The result

Finished seven weeks ahead of schedule, the new asphalt anti-skid surface is flat and even, providing a safer driving experience for people using the roads going through Ripon Market Place.

The surface will also avoid unsightly defects and limit disruption caused by repairs that are regularly required.

The block paving has been retained in key areas to preserve the heritage and character of the historic market place.

Cllr Andrew Williams, who represents the Ripon Minster and Moorside division on North Yorkshire Council, said: “I am grateful for the efforts of our highways team who have led on this project and have delivered a scheme which has given Ripon smooth and level roads which are a pleasure to drive upon.”
